You have a house full of kids on the Fourth of July and the fireworks are not until 9pm. That is a whole lot of hours to fill before the main event.

And we all know what happens when kids get bored at a party. They start chasing the dog or get into the snack table for the fifth time. They ask you every 20 minutes if it is time for fireworks yet.

The solution is simple. Keep their hands busy and their minds engaged all day long with crafts that are fun, easy, and genuinely exciting for kids of every age.

We just talked about how to keep your whole party budget under control in our last post on How to Throw a Fourth of July Party on a Budget and the good news is that every single craft on this list is incredibly affordable too.

So let us get into all 19 crafts and make this the most fun Fourth of July your kids have ever had.

Why Crafts Are the Secret Weapon of Every Great Kids Party

Here is something every parent and host needs to hear.

A craft is not just an activity. It is a built in entertainer that runs itself once you set it up.

You lay out the supplies, explain what to do, and suddenly every kid at the party is completely absorbed for the next 30 to 45 minutes. No screens, complaining and no chaos.

Plus kids go home with something they made themselves. Something they are genuinely proud of. That sense of pride and accomplishment makes the whole day feel even more special for them.

So think of these crafts as your secret weapon for a stress free Fourth of July party.

Paper and Cardstock Crafts That Come Together Fast

These crafts use the most basic supplies imaginable. Paper, scissors, glue, and crayons. Simple to set up, easy to clean up, and kids absolutely love them.

1. American Flag Handprint Art

This one becomes a keepsake that parents genuinely treasure for years.

Lay a piece of white cardstock flat on the table. Paint one of the child’s hands with red and blue stripes using a paintbrush or sponge. Press it firmly onto the paper and lift straight up cleanly.

While the paint dries use a white paint pen or white crayon to add small stars in the blue section of the handprint. Write the child’s name and the year underneath in red marker.

Every single parent in the room will want to frame this. It takes about 10 minutes per child and the results are absolutely adorable.

2. Patriotic Paper Plate Shield

Give each child a plain white paper plate and set out red and blue paint, star stickers, and small American flag stickers.

Let them paint their plate in their own patriotic design. Some kids will make careful stripes. Others will cover the whole thing in handprints and stars. Both are perfect.

Once the paint dries attach two strips of cardboard to the back with hot glue to create handles. Kids carry their shields around for the rest of the party feeling like patriotic superheroes.

Set out star stickers, glitter glue, red and blue markers, and small flag stickers. Let each child decorate their crown however they want.

Staple or tape the ends together to fit their head size. Every child at the party becomes royalty for the day and they wear these crowns with the most adorable pride all afternoon long.

5. Fireworks Painting With Toilet Rolls

Save up toilet paper rolls in the weeks before the party. Cut small fringe slits around one end of each roll about an inch deep all the way around.

Dip the fringed end into red, white, or blue paint and press it onto black construction paper. The fringe creates a starburst fireworks pattern that looks absolutely stunning.

Layer multiple fireworks in different colors across the paper. Add white paint dots around the bursts using the eraser end of a pencil for extra sparkle effect. The finished paintings look like real fireworks lighting up a night sky and kids are so proud of them.

Set out red, white, and blue acrylic paint and small paintbrushes. Let kids paint their rocks however they like. Stars, stripes, flags, and fireworks all look amazing on rocks.

Once the paint dries seal them with a coat of Mod Podge to make the colors last. Kids take their painted rocks home and display them in their gardens or on their windowsills all summer long.

7. Patriotic Tie Dye T-Shirts

This is the craft that kids talk about for weeks after the party.

Buy plain white t-shirts in bulk before the party. Set up a tie dye station outside with red and blue fabric dye, rubber bands, and plastic gloves for each child.

Show kids how to twist and rubber band their shirt in different sections. Let them squeeze red dye on some sections and blue dye on others. The white spaces between the dye become the white in their patriotic color scheme.

Wrap finished shirts in plastic wrap and let them sit for at least an hour before rinsing. The results are always different and always beautiful. Every child ends up with a completely unique wearable piece of Fourth of July art.

8. Watercolor Fireworks Cards

Tape off a border around a piece of watercolor paper using painters tape. Give each child a set of watercolor paints in red, white, and blue plus black.

Paint the whole paper black first and let it dry for a few minutes. Then use wet red, white, and blue watercolor paint to create fireworks burst shapes on top of the black background.

The wet paint on the slightly damp black background creates beautiful soft blending effects that look genuinely artistic. Peel off the tape border when dry to reveal a clean white frame around the painting.

These cards look so good that parents often get them framed. Kids feel incredibly proud of how professional their finished painting looks.

Let kids knead their slime until it reaches the right stretchy consistency. Then let them combine their three colors in swirling patterns to create patriotic marbled slime.

The sensory experience of making and playing with slime keeps kids completely engaged for a surprisingly long time. Send each child home with their slime in a small sealed container as a party favor.

18. Sticker Flag Art

Print a simple outline of an American flag on white paper. Set out red and blue dot stickers and star stickers.

Let toddlers fill in the flag outline by pressing stickers onto the paper. Red dot stickers fill the stripes. Blue dot stickers fill the corner. Star stickers go anywhere and everywhere.

This craft is completely safe for very young children, requires zero skill, and produces a result that looks genuinely cute. Every toddler feels enormously proud of their finished flag.

19. Patriotic Stamping With Sponges

Cut kitchen sponges into star and circle shapes. Set out shallow trays of red and blue paint and large sheets of white paper.

Let toddlers dip the sponges into the paint and stamp them onto the paper in any pattern they like. The chunky sponge shapes are easy for little hands to grip and the stamping motion is deeply satisfying for young children.

The finished papers look like festive wrapping paper and can actually be used to wrap small gifts or line the bottom of gift bags.

Setting Up Your Craft Station for Maximum Fun

Here is the practical side of running crafts at a party that makes everything go smoothly.

Set up one long table dedicated entirely to crafts. Cover it with a disposable tablecloth for easy cleanup. Organize supplies into labeled sections so kids can find what they need without asking for help.

Run two or three crafts at a time rather than all 19 at once. Rotate new crafts onto the table throughout the day to keep things fresh and exciting. This gives kids something new to look forward to every hour or so.

Keep wet wipes and paper towels at the craft table at all times. Paint covered hands touching everything in sight is a real party hazard that wet wipes solve immediately.

Have a drying area set up nearby where finished crafts can sit safely until they are ready to be collected. A clothesline with wooden pegs works perfectly for drying painted items.

And while the kids are busy crafting make sure the adults are having just as much fun by checking out our post on 15 Fourth of July Party Games for Adults and keeping everyone at the party thoroughly entertained all day long.

Now set up that craft table and get ready for the most creative Fourth of July your kids have ever experienced.
